Heart of Breaking is a work for modern dance. I collaborated with Kelli Dowling through the Hammer and Nail Composition/Modern Dance program at IU. In the work, we wanted to develop a narrative that went from a broken heart from loss to healing. For the first section, recordings of broken glasses are used to create a sonic landscape from the acousmatic sounds. They are played back at various speeds and through filters to create the opening texture. As the work progresses, the sounds of breaking glass die away, leaving a near empty sonic palette. The final section takes a branching Lindenmayer system and sonifies it. The branching system is used to represent healing, as plant growth can be represented by Lindenmayer systems. As the system builds up to it's peak, the work ends in a drastically different sonic world than it began.
